Moses Murtala Aminu a thirty year old first class graduate of Economics from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria was shot dead by a Nigerian police constable, Alex Okpe.
He was shot dead as he tried to defend his girlfriend who was being assaulted by Okpe.
According to his friend and eyewitnesses, Moses had left his house for a party in Barnawa, Kaduna where the police constable was beating up Moses’ girlfriend outside the party venue.
As Moses tried to stop him, the police constable reached for his gun and fired, killing him instantly. Then the police constable shot again into the air to scare people and fled.
According to AIT, the constable has been tracked down and arrested by Barnawa Police Division officers.
Femi Adenaike, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, confirmed the incident saying that it was true Alex Okpe was arrested and he confessed to the killing during interrogation.
He also said that Okpe stated that he fired in ‘self-defence’ when Moses and his friends were trying to fight him over his girlfriend. According to the Police, Okpe was not even sent to Barnawa as at that time and he will be tried and dismissed if found guilty.
“The suspect is in the cell and we have commenced investigation. And if he is found guilty, we will give him an in-house trial and summary dismissal so that he can face the law for homicide,” the police boss said.
Until Murtala Aminu’s death, he was the youth leader, Catholic Holy Family Church, Barnawa. He also owned a shawamar and roasted fish outlet at Narayi-Highcost.
