Black Friday is finally here, and Nigerians have been thronging online retail stores since midnight, scrambling for hot deals and price slash they would otherwise not get on a regular day.
So far, Nigeria’s top online stores: Jumia, Konga and Deal Dey have been displaying their stock at discounted prices, with most of the goods selling out in just a couple of minutes.
However, some customers are already questioning the authenticity of these so-called Black Friday deals. A buyer (who’d rather remain anonymous) says“I had my eyes on one LCD TV on Jumia, but at 12:05 am, Friday morning, the stock was already sold out! This made me wonder if it was really possible for ALL of that particular product to be sold out in just 5 minutes.”
Others are of the opinion that Black Friday in Nigeria is not real because the online stores only reduced prices of “irrelevant” products that people had no interest in buying anyways.
Another customer even claimed that a product quoted at N52,999 on one of these websites still maintained that figure as the new slashed price. Unbelievable right?
Well, we cannot draw any conclusions just yet, because Black Friday isn’t over. Aside from this purported “scam alert,” some Nigerian shoppers are complaining about the online stores’ inability to handle the high influx of buyers on their websites, with prospective buyers having to wait for several minutes to view products or even check out after shopping. Foreign retail websites like Amazon and ASDA , are having it good with a steady flow of “traffic” and a wide range of deals. So far, these websites have been stable – no reported crashes or “fake deals.”
Hopefully, before the day runs out, Nigerians may be singing a different tune. Till then, let’s watch and see how it all unfolds.
