Blood of Ebola survivor Dr. Kent Brantly will be used to treat the third American who contracted the deadly virus.

Some days ago we reported about the recommendation given by the World Health Organization (WHO) to the countries mostly affected by the disease outbreak. The UN body said that survivors’ blood could help the infected patients to recover as it develops antibodies and immunity to the virus.

The WHO referred to the studies carried out on the 1995 outbreak in Congo, according to which 7 out of 8 people survived after being given the “survivors blood” therapy.
Today NBC News reports with reference to Samaritan’s Purse  that Brantly donated his blood to the American Dr. Rick Sacra last week, as it was provided by President and CEO Franklin Graham.

It was said that Brantly’s blood was “a perfect match” to that one of the new patient.
Wife of Dr. Sacra, who volunteered in Liberia to help Ebola patients, said how they appreciated Brantley’s move. Debbie said:
“It really meant a lot to us that he was willing to give that donation so soon after his own recovery.”
Sacra also reportedly received an experimental Ebola drug, however the doctors did not allow to mention its name.

The therapy seems to be effective as Sacra is believed to be recovering. Graham was quoted saying:
“Dr. Brantly said that when he saw him last week he was in pretty bad shape. It sounds like he has made a dramatic turn.”
His treating doctor confirmed that the progress was “remarkable”.
Meanwhile in Nigeria there is currently no active case of the EVD, which was made known yesterday by the Ministry of Health. However the virus is still ravaging West Africa, specifically Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and the global community fears the situation might worsen in the nearest future.
